The Magic of Dome Projection Flying Theatre

“Dome projection creates new possibilities. With its incredible immersive effects, it can ‘teleport’ an audience to any corner of the Earth or the universe.”

The moment you step into a dome flying theater, the scenery instantly envelops you. Within minutes, you can “soar” into the starry sky, feeling as if you could reach out and touch the twinkling stars; or “dive” into the deep sea, watching vibrant corals and schools of fish swim past. This all-encompassing visual and auditory experience allows one to temporarily forget reality and become immersed in a fantasy world crafted by light and shadow.

The Gold Standard: Disney’s “Soaring” Experience

At Shanghai Disneyland, the attraction Soaring Over the Horizon stands as a masterpiece of this technology.

Originally conceived at California Disney and meticulously upgraded for Shanghai, the project utilizes 4D giant screen projection and flight simulation technology to simulate a global flight for guests. Once seated, you are transformed into a thunderbird, taking off from Adventure Isle to begin a world tour. You glide over 13 iconic global landmarks, from towering mountain ranges and bustling metropolises to ancient ruins and magnificent natural wonders.

To enhance realism, the seats subtly rise and fall with the footage, mimicking the undulations of flight. More impressively, different scenes are paired with unique scents: the fragrance of roses wafts as you pass the Taj Mahal; the scent of fresh grass greets you over the African Savanna; and a refreshing sea breeze hits as you reach the South Pacific. It is a complete sensory feast fusing sight, sound, touch, and smell.

Bringing the Experience Closer to Home

Beyond Disney, many domestic theme parks in China have launched dome flight projects with local flair.

  • Wuhan Happy Valley: The “Soaring Over the Yangtze” project takes you from the river’s source, across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, through Wuhan, and finally to the estuary in Shanghai.

  • Chongqing Happy Valley: “Soaring Over Chongqing” starts from Fairy Mountain, gliding over the Yunyang Longgang, through Hongyadong and Jiefangbei, and across the Yangtze River Bridge. High-definition visuals and surround sound allow guests to truly feel the charm of the “Mountain City.”

Today, experiencing such awe no longer requires a special trip to a massive theme park. As one of China’s earliest original developers of indoor dome flight theaters, Wehop Tech has introduced flight theater projects to shopping malls and indoor playgrounds. These have been successfully implemented in multiple cities to widespread acclaim.

In the past, consumers often had to pay high admission fees at major parks like Disney, Universal Studios, or Happy Valley to experience these films. Now, Wehop Tech is bringing flight theaters into daily life, making the immersive “Soaring Over the World” experience more convenient and accessible. These products are not only favored domestically but have also successfully entered overseas markets.

Revitalizing Traditional Culture

Dome technology is also breathing new life into traditional culture, offering a fresh way to present cultural IPs.

  • “Soaring Over the Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival”: This project brings the legendary painting to life on a massive dome screen. Through digital technology, the masterpiece is transformed into a 360-degree panoramic, glasses-free 3D experience. On motion seats, viewers feel as if they have traveled back a thousand years to wander the bustling streets of Northern Song Dynasty’s Bianjing.

  • “Supreme Longmen” (Luoyang): Utilizing a panoramic dome and 3D sound, this project narrates the legend of “the carp jumping over the Dragon Gate” and the glory of Luoyang during the Tang Dynasty, culminating in the solemn image of the Vairocana Buddha.

Whether showcasing the pinnacle of modern audiovisual technology or rejuvenating ancient heritage, the dome serves as an irreplaceable medium for immersion. It crafts dreams out of light and shadow, allowing us to see the world—and history—in the most extraordinary way.
